A common pest found destroying fabrics in our homes is the carpet beetle. Ranging from 2-5mm long, there are three main species in Britain which are responsible. The varied carpet beetle, resembling a small mottled ladybird and often brown, grey and cream in colour. The fur beetle, black in colour with a single spot on each wing case and the rarer black carpet beetle which ranges from a reddish brown to black.

The larvae of the carpet beetle, often known as ‘woolly bears’ are a major textile pest in Britain, it is the larvae that consume a wide range of animal-based items such as hair, wool, fur and feathers. As a result of this they often infest carpets, blankets, upholstered furniture, pillows, clothing etc. Although considered unusual, they have also been found feasting on synthetic fabrics soiled by food, oils and perspiration. The life cycle of the carpet beetle takes approximately one year and are often found most active during October before they take shelter to hibernate.
