Ladybird Pest Control
This Ladybird species is said to have arrived in Britain after landing in mainland Europe from Asia, after they were introduced to help tackle pests attacking plant species. There are an estimated 5,000 different species of ladybird bugs in the world, with 46 types of the bug in the UK.
The Harlequin Ladybirds could bite if they are woken from their slumber – resulting in a small lump that stings slightly. Although the bugs will not infect you with their bite, they can be extremely difficult to remove from the home. The species is also larger and more aggressive than other types of ladybird – and is big enough to even eat seven other types of the beetle. They are distinguishable from other ladybirds from their large size, with the Harlequin species measuring between 7-8mm in diameter. Harlequin ladybirds can also be noticed by the spots on their back, ranging from none to 21, varying in colour from orangey-red to plain black.
The Harlequin’s also cluster together in order to stay warm for the coming winter ahead. They can also leave behind a chemical-like odour and leave staining on furniture and fabric in the home.
Urban Pest Control can offer different treatment methods depending on the size of infestation. An insecticide ULV fogging machine or smoke generator can be applied to voids such as lofts whilst a residual insecticide spray may be applied around windows, ceilings and walls. All treatments carried out adhere to COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Heath) Regulations 2002.
One treatment is often enough to deal with the main infestation and drastically reduce numbers, however with ‘new’ harlequin ladybirds constantly entering it is not always possible to completely eradicate all ladybirds. Because of this, it is recommended that a premises should be treated twice a year due to life cycles.
