Emergency Pest Control and Removal Weymouth
Weymouth, one of the top 10 beaches in Europe, has been a popular destination for many holiday makers over the years. This gorgeous beach, which has been awarded the Blue Flag, has something to offer everyone. From their traditional Punch and Judy shows and the popular donkey rides across the beach to relaxing in a deckchair or enjoying the ever-changing sand sculptures created by Mark Anderson at Sandworld, Weymouth beach is fun for all the family.
Of course, the beach isn’t the only reason to pay a visit to Weymouth. The Georgian buildings are host to many businesses catering to tourists and locals alike. The streets are lined with a mix of small independent boutiques and major retail brands selling everything you may need.
The hustle and bustle of Weymouth isn’t restricted to the daytime. During the hours of 5pm – 5am Weymouth town council works closely with street pastors, Dorset police and Dorset council to ensure the town is a safe, positive place to enjoy local events and restaurants at all times. This work has been widely recognised with the town receiving the Purple Flag accreditation.
As well as the sea views, Weymouth holds rural charm with the beautiful South Dorset Ridgeway a short distance away. These green spaces, popular with caravan and camping enthusiasts, contain the best of both worlds that the Jurassic Coast and Purbeck district has to offer.
The seaside town is steeped in history, which is proudly celebrated throughout the streets with monuments and statues of royal visitors to the town. Some highlights are the colourful Jubilee Clock Tower, built to mark Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, and the statue and famous chalk white horse of George 3rd who would take up summer residence at his brother’s home, Gloucester Lodge. More recently the streets of Weymouth were visited by the Princess Royal, Princess Anne, to open the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic sailing events.
The town was once known for the trading of wine and wool in the harbour side of the town. Although the import and exports no longer trade from Weymouth, the 1930 lifting bascule town bridge continues to rise to allow entry to the inner harbour.
The golden arc of sand on the western edge of Weymouth, Chesil Beach, is 28 km long and 160m wide. This barrier beach is a fisherman’s dream, with the water rich with mackerel, and is also the main connection to the mainland for the isle of Portland.
Portland, a scenic and serene area, is the most southern and rugged point on the Jurassic Coast. With big rocks and shallow reefs, Portland Bill Lighthouse, first lit in 1906, still functions to this day to aid ships travelling nearby the isle.
It is still functioning, but the red and white striped, 41 metered tower of Portland Bill Lighthouse is also open to tourists who can enjoy spectacular views from the lantern room during the 45-minute tours – they just need to climb its 153 steps first.
Portland offers a wide variety of activities. Thrill seekers can enjoy rock climbing, kite surfing and abseiling amongst other things. For the less adventurous types, Portland can encourage you to take a leisurely walk to look at the maritime history the island has to offer at the Verne High Angle Battery, home to rare plants and much wildlife.
Other than Portland Bill, the isle of Portland is best known for its quarries of limestone, most of which are owned by the Crown Estate. Portland stone has been used in the construction of high-profile buildings such as The United Nations Headquarters in New York and London’s St Paul’s Cathedral.
