Bee Swarm Collection at Bournemouth & Poole College
The 2020 bee swarming season has seen constant activity for the beekeepers at Urban Pest Control. During the COVID-19 pandemic, our busy beekeepers have been out providing bee swarm collection services in East Dorset and the surrounding areas, to keep the public and the bees safe.
One of our emergency pest control call-outs was from Mike, the Estates Manager at Bournemouth & Poole College, when he discovered a bee swarm this week within the grounds of the College at North Road, Poole. Urban Pest Control responded to this swarm the same day, collected all the bees safely and rehomed them at a new, safe location just outside of Wimborne in East Dorset.
This large bee swarm collection contained several thousand bees including a few drones, worker bees and one queen. When our pest control expert, Matt, arrived on site and approached the swarm which was on the grass, he used a specialist bee smoker to calm the queen and worker bees, so they were encouraged to go inside a specifically designed wooden bee swarm collection box. Once the bees had been carefully collected and the temperature had cooled down, just before dusk, the bees were successfully transferred into a hive in Wimborne.
While on-site, Matt explained to Mike that last winter, experts said, that there was nearly a 40% decline in the honeybee population. Thanks to Bournemouth & Poole College we have worked together to help to save the bees and protect our endangered pollinators. Mike commented “We recognise that these are difficult times for everyone at the moment during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was great to have some positive news and do our bit for the conservation of our native honeybee population”.
