Defender Bird Spikes Installer of the Month
Urban Pest Control was recently called to assist a local ambulance depot, dedicated to aiding the NHS, in dealing with a persistent issue involving nuisance pigeons in the void behind their roller shutter door. These pest birds not only triggered the alarm system but also left guano and other debris at the entrance, causing the area to require constant cleaning. Following an initial survey, a combination of bird proofing methods was recommended. Director Matt and area manager Andy, both members of the Urban team, were chosen to carry out the two-day installation. Alongside them was Wayne, experienced IPAF trained operator from Touch Access, whose cherry picker allowed us to safely reach the required height.
The bird control methods implemented included the strategic use of bird netting, galvanised mesh, and the installation of pigeon spikes sourced from Defender Bird Spikes. These measures were put in place to deter birds from nesting and to significantly reduce the accumulation of bird debris.
We shared this successful project with our followers on Facebook, and this recognition led to Defender Bird Spikes selecting Urban Pest Control as their esteemed Installer of the Month for August 2023. We were genuinely delighted to receive this unexpected award, appreciating the acknowledgment of our hard work within the industry.

Jones & Son Pest Control Supplies Ltd was founded by the husband-and-wife duo, David and Kursty Jones, back in 1997. David, who was previously a pest controller himself, recognised the limitations imposed by the cost of importing bird spikes from overseas suppliers, which restricted his work to average homeowners. Identifying a gap in the market for a UK-based brand, David came up with a pragmatic solution: manufacturing the bird spikes himself. Thus, Defender Bird Spikes were born.
Defender Bird Spikes boast a distinctive patterned design, featuring pins that are resistant to corrosion and crafted from recycled stainless steel. These pins are meticulously inserted into various polycarbonate bases, which are produced through injection moulding. Every aspect of their operation, from design to manufacturing and shipping, takes place within their warehouse located in Devon. Today, Defender Bird Spikes are dispatched globally, with a commitment to delivering bird spikes to customers across the UK the very next day. David, Kursty, and the entire team at Defender Bird Spikes consistently seek ways to enhance their business, whether through refining their spike designs or by pursuing eco-friendly initiatives such as sourcing supplies from local companies and adopting environmentally responsible printing and delivery practices.
